He’s a dangerous opponent for anyone and he looked great in the opening minutes of his fight against Ross Pearson. He’s got knock out power and he’s fought and beaten some of the toughest guys in the UFC’s Lightweight division. He has a ton of experience and he’s tough as nails but at only 30 years old he’s had over 40 professional fights and I can’t help but feel that it’s starting to take it’s toll on his body.
Despite Guillard’s pedigree as an elite fighter, I do feel that Michael Johnson has all the tools necessary to beat him. Guillard’s main threat is his knock out power, but Johnson has never been knocked out and has an incredible chin. Johnson also fights at an extremely high pace and I don’t think Guillard will be able to match his work rate for 3 rounds. Many of Guillard’s opponents have wilted under his early pressure, but Johnson won’t. He will be able to match Guillard’s intensity and weather the early storm and this will be his key to victory.
Michael Johnson also has a couple of physical attributes that will help him win this fight. The first is his slight reach advantage and the second is his Southpaw stance. These advantages should be enough for Johnson to stay competitive in the striking exchanges.
This will be a close fight, but I do feel like both fighters are in transitional periods of their careers. Melvin Guillard went from being a top contender, to only winning 2 out of his last 7 fights. Whilst Michael Johnson went from being a perennial under achiever, to an absolute wrecking ball in the UFC’s Lightweight division. Johnson’s looked incredible in his last two fights and I fully expect him to build on his recent success with another win on Saturday night.
