[mpc_divider align=”left” lines_color=”#679f42″ lines_weight=”5″ padding_css=”padding:0px;” margin_divider=”true” margin_css=”margin-bottom:20px;”]Patricky “Pitbull” Freire has talked a lot over the last year about his desire to become the Bellator Lightweight Champion, but actions speak louder than words and his last performance against Kevin Souza was terrible. He certainly didn’t look like a guy who would deserve the accolade of becoming a Champion in one of the biggest MMA organisations in the world. His win over Souza said more about Souza’s poor fight IQ than about Pitbull’s skills in the Bellator cage.
I want to make it clear from the offset that Pitbull can win this fight, afterall, this is Bellator and anything can happen in these smaller promotions. We could get screwed by bad judging or shady refereeing decisions and there’s always the possibility that Michael Chandler could flake out on us like so many fighters in the B leagues seem to do. Having said that, Chandler’s advantages over Pitbull are clear and significant and this is his fight to lose.
Pitbull’s biggest weakness as a fighter is his inactivity, which plays right into the strengths of Chandler’s high pressure, high volume, grinding style of fighting. Pitbull just doesn’t do enough to win rounds and fights often pass him by. He throws a very low volume of strikes per round and he’s not particularly strong in grappling exchanges. If this fight stays standing, Chandler should easily be able to win rounds by picking Pitbull apart and landing a higher volume of strikes. Pitbull doesn’t throws combos, he is a single shot fighter who looks for the big hail mary KO. If he lands big on Chandler he will hurt him, but Chandler should cruise to an easy decision win if he can just avoid getting rocked by one of Pitbull’s big knockout strikes.
On the ground Chandler will have a significant advantage over Pitbull because he has been able to use his NCAA Division 1 level wrestling pedigree to develop a style of MMA wrestling that employs explosive takedowns, strong top control and nasty ground and pound. Pitbull has a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but his takedown defence isn’t great and he’s not dangerous off his back at all. Chandler should be able to secure takedowns in this fight and beat Pitbull up from top position.
The clinch is an area where Chandler can have a lot of success against Pitbull. Chandler loves to grind on his opponents against the cage and Pitbull doesn’t have the technique, strength or skills to stop this from happening. I see Chandler scoring points on the judges scorecards with long periods of cage control.
Pitbull has legit KO power and therefore has a legit puncher’s chance of winning this fight, but if he can’t get the finish I don’t see how he can win. Chandler is simply too active and aggressive to lose a decision. This bet should win easily.
