Lorenz Larkin was a huge signing for Bellator, but so far he has failed to live up to expectations going 0-2 in his last two fights, losing to respectable opponents in Douglas Lima and Paul Daley. In a desperate attempt to help him get his career back on track, Bellator has now matched him up against Fernando Gonzalez who is a perfect stylistic opponent for Larkin to showcase his skills against.

Fernando Gonzalez is no joke, and this is certainly not a squash match, but Larkin’s style will be very difficult for him to deal with and the Bellator brass must know this. Gonzalez is the perfect type of opponent here because he’s good enough to be a respectful win on Larkin’s MMA record, but not good enough to cause Larkin significant problems unless something crazy happens.

Gonzalez is a tough, one dimensional Boxer who likes to walk his opponent’s down and chip away at them. He doesn’t possess KO power, and he doesn’t bring any other weapons to MMA other than his Boxing. He does not wrestle, he doesn’t try to take guys down, and he doesn’t throw kicks or fight in the clinch. This style of fighting will not be effective against Larkin who likes to stay on the outside and react to what his opponent is doing. As Gonzalez moves forward in a traditional Boxing stance, Larkin will move around on the outside and pick him off with jabs and leg kicks.

Speed kills in MMA and Larkin has an enormous speed advantage in this fight. This will be a huge factor because Larkin should be able to significantly outstrike Gonzalez and use his speed to avoid taking damage. Larkin also throws a much more diverse range of strikes that will enable him to slow down the one-dimensional offense that Gonzalez brings to the table.

Larkin has a significant speed and technique advantage over Gonzalez with the cardio to deal with his high-pressure style of striking. He should be able to chip away for 3 rounds and win a comfortable decision.
