One of the reasons I think Georges should retire is that he was on my podcast and he was talking about being abducted by aliens. I was going, ‘you think you’ve been abducted by aliens?’ He starts talking about missing time. He started talking about driving his car and all of a sudden he’s at home and he has no idea how he got there. In his fight against Hendricks he spoke about some serious memory loss. I think he’s taken too many shots. An interesting statistic is that Georges has taken more punches and kicks in his last three fights than any of his fights, ever. In fact, 50% of the shots he’s taken his entire career were in his last three fights. I think he should get out. I know the UFC probably doesn’t want to hear me say that, as the rematch with Johny Hendricks could be huge. I think they should just give Johny Hendricks the belt. I think Johny Hendricks won that fight. I think there are real problems with judging and I don’t think there should be a way for a guy to win a fight, but yet lose a fight. It’s just wrong.Joe Rogan is a great commentator and presents the UFC audience with interesting facts and analysis. One of the more memorable pieces of information he has shared recently, is the statistic that GSP holds the record for the most amount of time spent fighting in the Octagon, a staggering total time of over 5 hours. When you consider the type of punishment the body takes in an MMA fight, mixed with the intensive training that GSP engages in, it’s definitely not that crazy a statement to call for GSP to keep his retirement promise. Who knows if we will see GSP fighting again, but we wish him all the best tackling the personal problems that seem to be plaguing him. The Welterweight division has never looked so strong and after such a glorious career, it may be time for one of the greatest athletes in the history of combat sports to call it a day.
When George St Pierre announced his retirement to Joe Rogan after his fight with Johny Hendricks, many people were left wondering why? GSP didn’t give any specific reason why he was stepping away from Mixed Martial Arts, all he said was that he had personal problems that he needed to take care of.
At UFC 167’s post fight press conference, Dana White appeared furious that St-Pierre would retire from MMA, on the back of one of the most controversial judging decisions in recent history. 30 minutes later at the post fight media scrum, the UFC president seemed much happier after speaking to the man himself about his decision to retire.
Dana has since taken the stance that George St Pierre’s problems are nowhere near as bad as he thinks they are and that a rematch with Johny Hendricks could happen within 6 months. GSP also seems open to the idea of returning to action, as he has since spoken on Twitter about his potential return.
One man who disagrees with Dana’s decision to encourage St Pierre back into the Octagon is Joe Rogan. Not many people have been happy to see GSP step away from the UFC, but in a recent interview Rogan put forward a worthy argument that should make us all think twice about the welfare of UFC fighters. This is what he had to say…
