Conor McGregor has been famously quoted as saying “I don’t just knock them out, I pick the round”. For his most recent fight against Denis Siver, he predicted that he would finish the German inside 2 minutes. Unfortunately, his prediction didn’t come true, but he did win in impressive fashion within just 2 minutes of the 2nd round. So why do people still doubt him?
McGregor can be brash, cocky and even borderline arrogant at times, so it’s no surprise that he rubs people the wrong way. But with another impressive finish over another top 10 opponent, there is no doubt that Conor is a very talented MMA fighter and that he is deserving of the number one contender position.
Conor McGregor has an impressive MMA record of 17-2 and he’s currently undefeated in the UFC with 5 straight wins. The UFC have now confirmed that McGregor will fight Jose Aldo for the Featherweight title at UFC 189 on July the 11th and yet there are critics who believe that there are more deserving contenders in the Featherweight division. McGregor has accomplished what few, if any fighters have managed to achieve in their first 5 UFC fights. He has a fan following like no other and Conor’s popularity continues to grow, yet there are many people who still doubt him. Like it or not, he is a UFC superstar and I believe him when he says that he’s only just getting warmed up. Afterall, he is just 2 years into his UFC career.
People either love him or hate him and like Chael Sonnen once said, that’s the absolute best place you can be. You either want people to love you or hate you, because if you’re in the middle, it means that nobody really cares. What makes Conor so unique, is that no matter whether you love him or hate him, he makes you care. He makes you want to watch him. Whether you want to watch him get his ass kicked or you want to see him win. He brings attention to himself, the sport, and every other fighter that fights on the card with him. He has put Irish MMA on the map and he’s bringing an army of new UFC fans with him. When you look back at Conor’s career, it’s kind of scary because he’s managed to accomplish all of this in under 2 years. What makes his achievements even more impressive, is that he was sidelined with an injury for 9 months of those 2 years, but even whilst sidelined, his popularity continued to grow.
Can Conor McGregor now go one step further and beat Jose Aldo?
Well if he can, it certainly won’t be easy…
Jose Aldo has only ever lost once and that single loss came on November 26, 2005 and that’s almost 10 years ago! Most MMA fans and media consider Jose Aldo to be not only be the best Featherweight in the world, but also the number 1 pound for pound fighter in the world. If McGregor actually beats Aldo in their upcoming fight, he will accomplish something that no other fighter in Zuffa history has done.
Only time will tell if Conor can live up to his hype and deliver on the promises and there’s no doubt that it will be an incredible build up to the fight. There are people that will say he’s got a lucky punch, he’s fought no wrestlers, and he’s only fought much smaller guys. But on July 11th, when he fights Jose Aldo, he will get his opportunity to silence his critics, by beating the greatest Featherweight to ever live.
