OUR PICK FOR THIS FIGHT…
Diego Brandao looked incredible when he competed on the Ultimate Fighter back in 2011. Since then he has managed to win 4 out of last 5 fights in the UFC, but has struggled to demonstrate the same devastating skillset that made him so feared on the show. Brandao tends to start strong and throw everything he has at his opponents early on in a fight. This should make for an interesting match up, as Poirier also fights at an extremely high pace. It is this pace that I believe will be the difference, as Brandao slows down and becomes less dangerous the longer a fight goes on. In his last fight Dustin Poirier dominated Erik Koch, who is an extremely tough opponent for anyone in the UFC’s Featherweight division. He looked dangerous anywhere the fight took place and Brandao won’t be able to keep up with the speed that Poirier will set in this fight. Poirier is also extremely well rounded and can compete with Brandao in both striking and grappling exchanges. Poirier is taller and I expect him to use his reach advantage to keep Brandao on the outside and pick him apart with high volume, technical striking. Brandao demonstrated devastating knock out power on the Ultimate Fighter, but since moving down to Featherweight he is yet to finish any opponent by either knock out or TKO. Brandao’s only real chance of winning this fight would come through a knock out and I can’t see it happening against an opponent as tough as Poirier.
