ALEXANDER GUSTAFSSON vs ANTHONY JOHNSON
When I first saw the odds for this match up, I instinctively favoured Anthony Johnson. Afterall, those underdog odds looked good and he’s been completely wrecking people since he came back into the UFC.
Unfortunately, my early optimism for Johnson’s chances of winning this fight were rapidly quashed, after I started to watch some recent fight footage from both guys. Alexander Gustafsson is simply better than Anthony Johnson in every single aspect of Mixed Martial Arts and he definitely deserves to be a heavy favourite in this fight.
If you skip to 4 minutes and 5 seconds of the video below, you’ll catch Alexander Gustafsson chatting with Jon Jones about his fight with Anthony Johnson. Jon Jones comments that “You’re too versatile for him. Come in, in good shape and there’s no way he should beat you” – and he’s right…
Alexander Gustafsson is a much more well rounded fighter than Anthony Johnson. He does a really great job of putting everything together. His transitions from striking, to the clinch, to grappling are excellent and he has a big speed advantage over Anthony Johnson. Anthony Johnson is a lot more one dimensional and his rigid stance and lack of footwork will leave him wide open to getting picked apart by Alexander Gustafsson.
When I am studying fight footage I ask myself a series of questions, which help me determine who has the best chance of winning a fight. In this instance, all the answers to my questions favoured Gustafsson…

Who will land the more strikes?
Gustafsson.
Who is the better MMA grappler?
Gustafsson.
Can Johnson take Gustafsson down?
No.
Will he be able to control him on the ground?
No.
Will he submit him?
No.
Will he knock be able to knock Gustafsson out?
Unlikely.
Will Johnson be able to outwork Gustafsson and win a decision in Gustafsson’s hometown?
No.

When you drill down and evaluate the skillset of both fighter’s, Johnson’s path to victory is very small. He basically has to knock Gustafsson out to win this fight and that’s unlikely because Gustafsson has an incredible chin.
With hometown advantage on his side, Alexander Gustafsson should be able to win this fight by using his excellent footwork and wider range of strikes to pick Johnson apart. Gustafsson fights very long and his superb boxing and strong striking defence will help him to avoid the majority of Johnson’s power punches.
There’s no way that Johnson will be able to outwork Gustafsson and there’s no way he’ll be able to win a decision in Gustafsson’s hometown.
