Cody Garbrandt has a short reach and has to wrecklessly leap into his opponent’s range to land his power strikes. Our betting tip and prediction...

Cody Garbrandt and Thomas Almeida are two rising stars in the UFC’s Bantamweight division who both have a lot in common. For example… They’re both 24 years old, they’re both undefeated, they’re both primarily strikers, they both have knockout power and they both have wreckless fighting styles…

It can be difficult to predict who will win when two fighters appear to be so evenly matched, but there are subtle differences in the fighting styles of both guys that make this a very good matchup for Almeida…

Cody Garbrandt’s only advantage over Almeida is his wrestling, but I don’t expect him to use it in this fight because he doesn’t have strong top control and Almeida is very difficult to hold down. Almeida’s takedown defence is poor, but he is very good at creating scrambles and exploding back to his feet. This means that Garbrandt is going to have to use up a lot of energy if he wants to keep this fight on the ground so I expect the majority of this fight to stay standing…

Thomas Almeida has a significant advantage over Cody Garbrandt when it comes to striking because his technique is a lot tighter than Cody’s. Cody’s style of striking consists mainly of him throwing wide looping hooks, whilst wrecklessly lunging into his opponent’s range in a desperate attempt to try and close the distance. Almeida’s style of striking focuses more on throwing power strikes that come straight down the middle. This striking dynamic favours Almeida considerably, because Cody’s strikes have to travel a much longer distance before they hit their target. Cody’s strikes are also a lot more telegraphed and he has to use up a lot more energy to throw them.

Thomas Almeida will have a 5 inch reach advantage over Cody Garbrandt, which is absolutely massive in the Bantamweight division. Almeida’s 5 inch reach advantage is huge because his style enables him to land power strikes from positions where Cody cannot counter him.

Garbrandt’s short reach forces him to leap into his opponent’s range in order to close the distance. This has worked in his last few fights against low level guys like Augusto Mendes, Henry Briones and Marcus Brimage, but this wreckless style of striking puts him at extreme risk of being knocked out by a devastating counter striker like Almeida.

Almeida and Garbrandt are both wreckless fighters, but Almeida does a much better job of capitalizing on openings and making his opponent’s pay for their mistakes. Almeida also throws a much wider range of strikes. Garbrandt only throws punches, whilst Almeida throws punches, knees, kicks and elbows. It’s also worth noting that Almeida lands almost double the amount of strikes per minute than Garbrandt does. This makes it extremely unlikely that Garbrandt will be able to win rounds by outpointing Almeida.

Thomas Almeida should easily win this fight if he can just avoid getting knocked out…

Betting Tip 2: Jake Collier to beat Alberto Uda

Jake Collier takes on UFC debutant Alberto Uda at UFC Fight Night 88 and we recommend betting on Jake Collier to win…

Risk Factors...

[ultimate_icon_list icon_size=”18″][ultimate_icon_list_item icon=”Defaults-exclamation-triangle warning” icon_color=”#ea5e50″]Jake Collier is a young and aggressive fighter who is still learning and still making mistakes.[/ultimate_icon_list_item][ultimate_icon_list_item icon=”Defaults-exclamation-triangle warning” icon_color=”#ea5e50″]Jake Collier has bad striking defence and a wreckless style of fighting.[/ultimate_icon_list_item][ultimate_icon_list_item icon=”Defaults-exclamation-triangle warning” icon_color=”#ea5e50″]Alberto Uda has vicious ground and pound.[/ultimate_icon_list_item][/ultimate_icon_list]

Our betting tip and prediction...

Jake Collier has a lot of holes in his game, but I don’t believe that Alberto Uda has the weapons to expose them. Take a look at some of Uda’s recent fights and see for yourself. All of these fights have taken place in the last 2 years:

As you can see, Uda’s style of fighting is very flawed. He’s a BJJ fighter, but he really struggles to get fights to the ground. Most of his takedowns come from the clinch, but his trips are telegraphed and his body control is weak.

Uda’s takedown entries are also very telegraphed and he shoots in from too far out of his opponent’s range. He also shoots in too high on his opponent’s hips, which makes it easy for them to secure underhooks and defend his takedown attempts.

Jake Collier is a big, strong fighter and a former State Wrestling Champion. He’s strong in the clinch and he has good enough takedown defence to stuff the type of takedowns that Uda likes to use. Collier also does a great job of working for underhooks in the clinch and keeping his back off the cage. Uda is only dangerous when he can take his opponent down and Collier certainly has the skills to keep this fight standing.

Collier and Uda both have poor striking technique, but Collier hits a hell of a lot harder and he’s game as hell. When you watch Uda fight, it’s clear that he doesn’t want to stand and strike because he’s always either trying to pin his opponent against the cage or stay all the way out of striking range. This is a sign of a fighter who can be broken, because he doesn’t want to mix it up.

Jake Collier has a wrestling base, but he also likes to stand and bang and he hits very hard. Collier and Uda both have bad striking technique, but Collier actively tries to use his wrestling in reverse to keep fights standing. Collier has KO power and he’s definitely the more comfortable fighter standing up.

Alberto Uda is making his UFC debut against Jake Collier who is an aggressive young fighter with the skills to shut down Uda’s most dangerous weapons. It’s really hard making your UFC debut and Uda doesn’t appear to have a Plan B if you shutdown his takedown attempts.

I predict that Jake Collier is going to win this fight by using his wrestling in reverse to stay out of the clinch and keep this fight standing. Both guys have sloppy striking technique, but in a straight up firefight I’d pick Collier to win all day long. Collier is young, hungry and physically strong and Uda is a weak, one dimensional BJJ practitioner. This bet isn’t completely rock solid because Collier does have holes in his game, but at underdog odds I think he’s a great bet.

    1. I’m not sure I would agree that Miranda has looked good in the UFC because he got dominated by Antonio Carlos Junior.

He was losing against Jake Collier before coming back from behind to win.

He was also losing against Hester and Guimaraes until they both gassed our and quit.

Miranda is a decent fighter, but he’s also a 37 year old Brazilian and USADA has had a big impact on a lot of fighters like Miranda. Camozzi is still young, aggressive and fights at a high pace.

My picks are always made from a betting perspective. I always pick the fighter where I see the most value. I would never bet Miranda at the current odds, so for that reason I have to go with Camozzi to win.

I hope that makes sense mate.
