[adrotate group=”103″]After a terrible run of results in November, UFC 181 was all about playing it safe and banking a good profit. I successfully did this by winning all 3 bets and this now gives us the perfect platform to end the year big. I know the odds on these fights weren’t great, but so many of the fights at UFC 181 could’ve gone either way and I just wanted to kick off December with a profit.
There are few things in life that give me more pleasure than seeing grapplefuck tactics being punished, so it was great to see Big Pettis, Baby Pettis, Travis Browne, Robbie Lawler, Josh Samman and Raquel Pennington all win, when all their opponents wanted to do was hold them down. It’s a bit of a shame that Francisco Rivera couldn’t have joined that list, but I really hope that his fight gets ruled a no contest and that the UFC gives him a rematch against Faber.
I’m also really liking how MMA in Las Vegas has been scored differently this year by putting more emphasis on damage and less emphasis on control. Over the last year, we have seen grapplefuck and lay and pray tactics consistently punished in Las Vegas and I hope that other Athletic Commissions start to do the same thing. Historically Hendricks would’ve beat Lawler 3-2 or 4-1, but there’s no question that Lawler did more damage. Someone said on Twitter “You can’t win a fight with your head between a dudes legs” and it’s true. I’m really glad that Robbie’s damage and aggression was given more credit than Johny’s control. I just wish that the different Athletic Commissions would be more open and honest about the way that they score fights, so that we as MMA bettors can work out who has the best chance of winning.
ONE FC have a different scoring system to other MMA organizations. They don’t award points for control, they award points for damage, strikes landed and submissions attempted. This style of scoring leads to more exciting fights and ground battles are a joy to watch because guys are constantly going after crazy submissions, because they aren’t afraid of giving up dominant positions. ONE FC’s scoring system scores fights just like they should be and this type of scoring leads to far fewer controversial decisions. The UFC and other organizations can learn a lot from the way that ONE FC scores their fights and I really feel that their scoring system would improve the global marketability of our sport.
